Getting licensed

In the United States, transmitting on ham radio frequencies requires a license from the FCC. The entry-level Technician license doesn’t require Morse code, has no age minimum, and covers a multiple-choice exam on basic radio theory, rules, and operating practices. Study guides and practice exams are widely available, and many local clubs run free or low-cost licensing classes. Listening to ham frequencies doesn’t require a license — only transmitting does.

The hobby is larger than most people expect: there are roughly three million licensed ham operators worldwide, about 750,000 of them in the United States, with the license base growing by around 1% a year — a trend partly credited to the Morse code requirement being dropped (Forbes, 2025).

Where emergency communications fits in

Two volunteer organizations connect licensed hams to real emergency response: ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) and RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service). Both organize licensed operators to support local emergency management, hospitals, and served agencies when normal communications fail. Joining one is usually as simple as contacting your local club or emergency management office.

What a first setup looks like

Most people start with a handheld VHF/UHF radio for local, line-of-sight communication through repeaters, then add a base station and a better antenna as they get more involved. Antenna quality and placement affect range far more than the radio itself — a modest radio on a good antenna will usually outperform an expensive radio on a poor one.
