This year hasn't been a fluke. The US has recorded a major power outage somewhere in the country nearly every month of 2026, and grid analysts aren't describing it as an anomaly — they're describing it as the new baseline for an aging system under rising strain.

Why this year has been different

Two pressures are colliding at once. On the demand side, data centers and continued electrification are pushing peak winter power demand up faster than new generation capacity is coming online — recent industry estimates put demand growth meaningfully ahead of planned supply additions. On the supply side, the grid itself is old, and severe weather has been the proximate trigger behind most of this year's larger outages, from ice storms to hurricanes to heat-driven demand spikes.

Why some regions carry more structural risk

Not all outages are equal, and not all grids fail the same way. Texas runs its own largely isolated grid (ERCOT), which limits how much emergency power it can import from neighboring states during an extreme heatwave or winter freeze — a structural design choice, not a temporary problem. Gulf Coast states like Louisiana sit directly in hurricane paths, where a single major storm can leave entire regions without power for days or weeks rather than hours. If you live in a region with either of these characteristics — grid isolation or storm exposure — a shorter list of realistic scenarios should already be built into your planning, not treated as a remote possibility.

What "grid-down" actually requires, in order

A short outage and a prolonged one call for different plans, and conflating them is where a lot of prepping goes wrong. The first 24–72 hours are about what you already have on hand: lighting, a way to charge essential devices, and food that needs no refrigeration or cooking. Past 72 hours, the questions change: how you're getting safe water if pumps and treatment plants lose power, how you're storing what perishable food you have left, and how you're getting real information when cell towers are running on generator backup with limited runtime.

The part people skip: verified information

During an extended outage, official information becomes both more important and harder to get. Cell networks degrade as tower backup batteries and generators run down over days, and normal news sources assume you have power and internet. This is exactly the gap that battery-powered NOAA weather radio and a charged, license-free FRS or GMRS radio are built to fill.

The mistake most people make

Most preparedness planning focuses on losing electricity. Far fewer people plan for losing everything electricity gives them access to. When the grid goes down for long enough, home internet and cell data usually go with it — and with them, cloud storage, online banking, password managers, GPS navigation, and the phone-based emergency alerts most people now rely on entirely. Information you technically own can become information you simply can't reach, at exactly the moment you need it most.

It's worth asking plainly: if the internet disappeared tonight, what would you no longer know how to access? Insurance policy numbers, prescription details, family contact numbers, local evacuation routes, the model number of the water heater you need a part for — none of it is gone, but all of it can become unreachable if it only ever existed behind a login screen or inside an app that needs a signal.

Information as a preparedness resource

The fix isn't complicated, just often skipped: critical information should be available when normal systems fail, stored offline so it doesn't depend on a connection, and kept secure so "offline" doesn't mean "unprotected." A folder of printed documents, an offline reference archive, and a bit of redundancy across formats does more for a genuinely prolonged outage than most of the gear people buy first.

Power, water, and food are the obvious first three concerns in any grid-down plan — and they should be. But a storm doesn't just take the lights out; it takes out everything you've quietly outsourced to an always-on connection. Reference material you can actually reach without the internet isn't a nice-to-have on top of a preparedness plan. It's one of the three or four things the whole plan depends on.
