Radios and spares
Most go-kits are built around at least one primary radio, plus a backup — different bands or services provide redundancy if one system is jammed, damaged, or simply out of range. Spare antennas and cables matter as much as the radio itself; a cracked antenna connector can take a radio out of service just as effectively as a dead battery.
Power
A radio without power is a paperweight. Go-kits typically include spare batteries, a way to recharge them (solar panel, hand-crank, or vehicle adapter), and cabling to match. Knowing your gear’s actual power draw and realistic runtime matters more than owning the biggest battery you can find.
Documentation and logging
Paper matters here more than most people expect. A written log of frequencies, contacts, and traffic passed is standard practice in organized EmComm work, and a physical, offline copy of local frequencies, callsigns, and procedures is worth far more than a bookmarked webpage during an actual outage.
Protection
Radios, batteries, and documentation are only useful if they survive being carried, dropped, and exposed to weather. A dedicated case — even a simple one — keeps a kit organized and protects it between uses, which matters more than most people expect until the one time it doesn’t.
Redundancy over quantity
The strongest go-kits aren’t the most expensive ones — they’re the ones built around multiple independent paths to communicate: ham radio, GMRS, NOAA weather radio, and in some cases a satellite messenger. No single technology is failure-proof, which is exactly why EmComm as a discipline is built around having more than one option.
